Insurance Agent, Adjuster, Broker or Limited Representative License
Request Duplicate License
To request a duplicate license, call Agent Services Division at 919-807-6800, send an e-mail request to ASD@ncdoi.gov, or submit a written request to Agent Services Division, 1204 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1204. The request must include the agent's name, National Producer Number (NPN), current mailing address and the type of license requested.
License Name Change
Send written notification to Agent Services Division, 1204 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1204. The notification must include the previous and new name, social security number and the licensee's signature. Attach a copy of the marriage certificate, divorce decree, or other legal document showing the reason for the name change.
Change My Address of Record
According to N.C.G.S. 58-2-69(b) " Every licensee shall give written notification to the Commissioner of any change of the licensee's residential address within 10 business days after the licensee moves into their new residence. Effective 01/01/2010, every licensee shall provide a valid e-mail address and give written notification to the Commissioner of any change to the licensee’s email address within 10 business days after the change. Failure to update residential address or e-mail within 10 business days shall result in a $50.00 fee. Licensees may change their residential or e-mail address by completing the Free E-mail and Address Update online contact information maintenance system through State Based Systems (SBS) available for North Carolina licensees. Licensees are required to provide current e-mail addresses because Agent Services Division sends license notifications via e-mail.
License Cancellation Requests
Return the license(s) with a written request to cancel them. Be sure the request is signed. If you are unable to find your license(s), submit a statement requesting license cancellation. The statement must be signed and must indicate which licenses you wish canceled. Indicate your name and National Producer Number (NPN). Agent Services Division accepts third-party license cancellations for company-sponsored licenses only.
Transfer Insurance License
Are you currently licensed in NC and moving to another state?
Contact the state to which you are moving for instructions on how to apply for licensure there. You must cancel your resident NC license(s) in order to receive a resident license in a new state. Return the license(s) with a written request to cancel them. Be sure the request is signed. If you are unable to find your license(s), submit a notarized statement requesting license cancellation. The statement must be signed and must indicate which licenses you wish canceled. Indicate your name and National Producer Number (NPN).
Submit a written request to Agent Services Division, 1204 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1204. The request must include the agent's name, National Producer Number and return address.
Are you currently licensed in another state and moving to NC?
In accordance with N.C.G.S. 58-33-32(d), an individual who applies for an insurance producer license in this State who was previously licensed for the same kinds of insurance in his or her home state shall not be required to complete any prelicensing education or examination. This exemption is only available if the application is received within 90 days after the applicant's previous home state license(s) are cancelled. ASD accepts the information on the Producer Database (PDB) maintained by the NAIC or affiliates or subsidiaries of the NAIC, indicating that the producer was licensed in good standing for the kind of insurance requested. An applicant who meets the required criteria and has moved to North Carolina may apply electronically using www.nipr.com. If completing an electronic application is not possible, a paper application can be provided by contacting the NC Licensing Office of Pearson VUE at (Toll Free): 866-265-6329.
Please note that in North Carolina, the Medicare Supplement/ Long-Term Care license is separate from the Life and Health license. If you had Medicare Supplement/Long-Term Care authority under your Life/Health license in your former home state, you may apply for this separate license when you apply for a Life/Health license within 90 days of cancellation of your previous home state license.
