Instructor Certification Requirements

Instructor I Requirements

The instructor candidate must be at least 21 years of age.

The instructor candidate must have a high school diploma or GED.

The instructor candidate must be certified a minimum of three (3) years as a FF II, TR, or FLSE.

Level I Instructor Exam is given at the end of the course by the Delivery Agency School Director or their designee in accordance with Pro Board / IFSAC requirements.  The class instructor may not proctor the exam.

Instructor II Requirements

The instructor candidate must be at least 21 years of age.

The instructor candidate must have a high school diploma or GED.

The instructor candidate must be certified a minimum of five (5) years as a FF II, TR, or FLSE.

The instructor candidate has two options for acquiring certification as an Instructor II.

Option 1 – Meet the entrance requirements and successful completion of the combined Instructor 1 and 2 courses.

Option 2 – Meet the entrance requirements, certified as an Instructor Level I, and successful completion of the Level II educational methodology course.

Level II Instructor Exam is given at the end of the course by the Delivery Agency School Director or their designee in accordance with Pro Board / IFSAC requirements.  The class instructor may not proctor the exam.

Instructor III Requirements

The instructor candidate must be at least 21.

The instructor candidate must have a high school diploma or GED.

The instructor candidate must be certified a minimum of two (2) years as an Instructor II.

The instructor candidate must be certified a minimum of seven (7) years as a FF II, TR, or FLSE.

Complete the workbook and submit to Educational Methodology Committee.
Successfully pass the certification exam for Instructor III. 

Qualification Areas for Instructor II –

To become a qualified instructor, the candidate must be certified a minimum of two (2) years as an Instructor II.  

To become a qualified instructor, the candidate must be certified a minimum of five (5) years in the certification subject.

To become qualified in new programs, the candidate will be required to obtain certification in the subject with no time requirement for holding certification for the first 3 years of the inception of the new program.  After the first three years of a new program release the candidate will be required to be certified in the subject for five years.  Effective December 7, 2011.

Exception - the following new subjects will be allowed qualification without the five year certification requirement provided they achieve qualification by April 1, 2014.  They must be certified in the subject area.

To become a Live Fire qualified instructor, the candidate must be qualified a minimum of five (5) years in the accredited area of Fire Fighter I / II.  All other prerequisites will remain.

To become a LP Gas qualified instructor, the candidate must be qualified a minimum of five (5) years in the accredited area of Fire Fighter I / II.  All other prerequisites will remain.

To become a RIT qualified instructor, the candidate must be qualified a minimum of five (5) years in the accredited area of Fire Fighter I / II.  All other prerequisites will remain.

Qualified Instructors must requalify in subject areas accredited by IFSAC and/or Pro Board every five (5) years or as the standard is revised.
