School Maintenance Electrician Certification - Information

School Maintenance Electrician Prep Course and Examination

June 15th (Optional Prep Course) & June 16th (Examination), 2020

Class and Exam may be rescheduled for inclement weather.

9 am – 3 pm Both Days

Application Deadline is June 5th, 2020.

The Prep Course is not required to take the Examination

Must have Government Issued Identification to Enter Building and take the Examination

Pocket Knives and Similar Objects are Not Allowed in the Building

In accordance with North Carolina General Statute § 115C-525(a)(2), the North Carolina Department of Insurance is conducting the examination for approving maintenance electricians regularly employed by the public school system.

All persons altering, adding, or installing electrical wiring in a public school building shall be licensed as an electrical contractor by the NC Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors or shall be certified as a school maintenance electrician by the NC Department of Insurance.

A licensed electrical contractor that is regularly employed by the school system and acting as an employee rather than a contractor while performing regular duties for the school system is not subjected to the examination process and shall be certified as a school maintenance electrician by the NC Department of Insurance upon properly executing and submitting the application for approval.

Applications for certification as a school maintenance electrician are provided on the next page and on the NCDOI/OSFM website. All inquiries shall be made to Joseph D. Starling, the State Electrical Engineer at 919-647-0020. Applications shall be mailed to 1202 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1202, Attention: Joseph D. Starling, or scanned and emailed to All applicants will be issued an approval or denial prior to the date of the examination.

Bring Only: Government Issued ID (typically a Driver’s License), 2017 NEC (No Handbooks), Pencils, Erasers, Basic Calculator (No Scientific Calculators), Eyeglasses, and extra clothing/sweater if necessary.

Snack/Drink Machines and Restrooms are in vicinity of the exam testing room.
