| Wayne Goodwin is a native of Hamlet, North Carolina, where his family was active in agriculture and banking. He was first elected to the statewide post of Insurance Commissioner in 2008. |

| As Insurance Commissioner, Goodwin will focus on consumer advocacy through fair rate making, injury prevention efforts and close regulation of insurance company solvency and industry practices. |

| Goodwin is the newest member to the Council of State, made up of the 10 statewide elected officials. Goodwin is also the State Fire Marshal. He serves as the state chair of Safe Kids North Carolina and the Arson Awareness Council, and is a member of numerous commissions and boards. |

| Prior to being elected as Insurance Commissioner, Goodwin served as the Assistant Insurance Commissioner for nearly four years. |

| He also served in the North Carolina House of Representatives, where he represented Richmond, Scotland, Montgomery and Stanly Counties for four consecutive terms. During his time in the North Carolina legislature, Goodwin sponsored legislation that led to greater incentives for economic development in rural areas, increases in education spending, improved health care, and enhanced public and occupational safety, security, election and campaign finance reforms, and consumer protection. Among many other honors, he received the Leadership in Government Award by Common Cause and the A+ Legislator Award by the NC Association of Educators. |

| Goodwin is a Morehead Scholar and U.S. Senate/William Randolph Hearst Scholar. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with honors in Political Science, and then went on to graduate from the UNC School of Law before practicing law in Richmond County for 13 years. |

| Wayne teaches Sunday School at First United Methodist Church in Rockingham and is a member of the Kiwanis Club and various civic, non-profit and other Boards including the NC Center for Voter Education, the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies Foundation, and the Methodist Home for Children. His wife, State Representative Melanie Wade Goodwin, is serving her third term in the legislature. The couple are the proud parents of daughter Madison and son Jackson. |
