James E. Long
Commissioner of Insurance, State of North Carolina

North Carolina’s Insurance Commissioner, Jim Long, began his sixth term in office in January 2005. Throughout his 20-plus-year tenure, Long has worked hard to protect consumers while regulating the ever-changing business of insurance. Plus, he serves as the State Fire Marshal and oversees numerous other industries and activities in the state, including bail bondsmen, auto clubs, the state building code and injury prevention programs.

An Alamance County native, Long served in the North Carolina House of Representatives (as did his father and grandfather) prior to being elected Insurance Commissioner. In addition, he previously served as legal counsel to the Speaker of the House and Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Insurance. This experience led him to making major improvements in the state’s oversight of insurance when he took office in 1985. Not only did he fully automate the Department within months of his arrival, successfully wiring the office to be the first state agency with email, but he also took steps to establish more consumer protection programs and improve upon those already in place.

Despite his many and varied accomplishments during his tenure, Commissioner Long may be best known for saving North Carolina drivers so much money in auto insurance rates. Each year the insurance industry files requests to alter North Carolina's insurance rates, but Long has consistently fought the industry's proposed rate increases when they were not warranted. His work has saved North Carolina consumers nearly $4.2 billion in auto insurance premiums alone, and has firmly seated our state as having the fifth lowest auto insurance rates in the nation!

As Insurance Commissioner, Long is the senior member of the Council of State and a past president and vice president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). He currently chairs the Arson Awareness Council and the Safe Kids North Carolina program, and serves as a member of numerous commissions and boards. Long was also one of the founders of North Carolina Special Olympics, which provides athletic competition to more than 37,000 mentally disabled North Carolina athletes each year. North Carolina hosted the International Special Olympics in 1999.
