Charlotte Man Arrested in Workers Compensation Scheme

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Jim Long today announced the arrest of Eric Stanley Stokes, 43, of 5914 Hidden Meadow Ln., Charlotte on Thursday. Stokes was charged with one count of obtaining property by false pretense. He was processed at the Mecklenburg County jail and released on a $2,500 secured bond.

Department of Insurance investigators allege that Stokes illegally received workers compensation benefits from UnumProvident Insurance Company. After recovering from an injury, Stokes allegedly returned to work for a different employer while still receiving workers comp benefits under his previous employer. Officials say he received some $3,000 in benefits.

The Department of Insurance employs 19 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. In 2006, these investigators saw 214 cases successfully closed with more than $14.2 million in restitution and recoveries and 41 criminal convictions.
