One Arrested on Charges of Insurance Fraud
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced today the arrest of an Edgecombe County man. The warrant alleges Johnny Harper, Jr., 26, 39 South Bowers Rd, Hobgood, N.C., collected two settlements for one auto insurance claim. Harper was arrested by Department of Insurance investigators with help from the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators say Harper filed a claim with State Farm Insurance reporting that while his vehicle was parked and unoccupied, it was hit and damaged by a motorist who was insured by State Farm. The insurance company paid Harper $1,229.92 for damages. But, according to the investigation, Harper had already received out-of-pocket money from the motorist who hit him.
Harper is charged with one count of obtaining property by false pretense and one count of insurance fraud. He was booked under a $5,000 unsecured bond.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. In 2008, these investigators saw more than 453 cases successfully closed with more than $5.8 million in restitution and recoveries, 60 criminal convictions and 130 arrests.
