Man Arrested in Alleged Insurance Fraud
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Michael Johnson, 48, whose last known address was 8415 Redding Ave., Charlotte. According to DOI investigators, Johnson submitted an insurance claim of $2,077 for a hotel stay after his home burned down in 2007. Johnson sent receipts from the Charlotte Garden Inn to Zurich North America Insurance. There was, however, one problem - investigators allege that some of the receipts were fraudulent and Johnson was not even staying at the hotel during part of the time he requested reimbursement for his hotel stay.
Johnson is charged with one count of obtaining property by false pretenses. He is currently in jail on other charges in Mecklenburg County. The hotel where Johnson claimed to have stayed has since closed.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. In 2008, these investigators saw more than 453 cases successfully closed with more than $5.8 million in restitution and recoveries, 60 criminal convictions and 130 arrests.
