Eighth Person Arrested in Accident Fraud Ring
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Keith Devon Acklin, 28, 1017 W. 4th St., Greenville, on one charge of attempting to obtain property by false pretense. Acklin is the eighth person arrested in what investigators are calling an auto insurance fraud ring that they allege operated for four years and staged accidents worth more than $100,000 in phony insurance payments from GMAC Insurance Company.
Acklin appeared before a Pitt County magistrate and is being held under a $50,000 secured bond awaiting extradition to Wayne County. Acklin is the younger brother of another suspect in this case, Rayon Lamont Artis. Artis has been in custody since Dec. 3, 2008.
The Greenville City Police assisted with this arrest and has been involved throughout the investigation.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. In 2008, these investigators saw more than 453 cases successfully closed with more than $5.8 million in restitution and recoveries, 60 criminal convictions and 130 arrests.
