Former Insurance Agent Pleads Guilty
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced Carol Marklew Overby, 52, 6371 N.C. Highway 119 N., Leasburg, pled guilty to one count of felony embezzlement. She was sentenced to 6 to 8 months in jail, suspended and placed on 60 months supervised probation. She must pay $20,712.62 in restitution to N.C. Farm Bureau Insurance. Overby may no longer act in the capacity of an insurance agent.
According to the investigation, Overby used a credit card and checks belonging to her former employer for personal purchases. According to the warrant, Overby embezzled more than $20,700 from Caswell County Farm Bureau Insurance.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. In 2008, these investigators saw more than 453 cases successfully closed with more than $5.8 million in restitution and recoveries, 60 criminal convictions and 130 arrests.
