Department of Insurance Receives Workers Comp Rate Filings
Commissioner Goodwin Orders Public Comment Period

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the receipt of the workers compensation rate filings from the North Carolina Rate Bureau, the organization that represents the state's workers compensation insurance companies. The filings requested a 9.6 percent decrease in the voluntary market and a 1.3 percent increase in the assigned risk markets.

For interested parties who would like to weigh in on the rate requests, there will be a public comment session on Sept. 15 from 9:30 a.m. to noon in Room 3009 in the Dobbs Building, 430 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh. Mailed public comments may be sent to: NCDOI, Attn: Bob Mack, Property & Casualty Division, 1201 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1201. The deadline for submitting written comments is Sept. 30.

"Transparency is an essential component of the government process," said Commissioner Goodwin. "Holding a public comment period for rate filing such as this is just another example of how my office is committed to providing the public as much information as possible."

The full filings are available for public review on the Department's Web site. Click on this link and search for Serff Tracking numbers NCPC-126289369 and NCPC-126289290.

If approved, the rate adjustments will go into effect on April 1, 2010, and businesses will save more than $119 million.
