Bondsman Arrested After Allegedly Taking Tips From Jailer
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Wycliffe Deneen-Niko Harrigan, 38, of 149 Viburn Way, Carrboro.
On May 6, the Orange County Sheriff's Office ran an undercover operation on a tip that one of their jailers was giving Harrigan, a bail bondsman, inside information about arrestees who needed to be bonded out of jail. The jailer involved was arrested.
A subsequent investigation by the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division lead to Harrigan's arrest. Harrigan is charged with one count of aiding and abetting unlicensed bail bonding. He was processed at the Orange County Jail and released on a written promise to appear.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. In 2009, these criminal investigators saw more than 413 cases successfully closed with more than $10.5 million in restitution and recoveries, 89 criminal convictions and 175 arrests.
