Greenville Insurance Agent Accused of Embezzlement
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Godfrey Gray Bell, Sr., 59, of 300 S. Memorial Drive, Greenville. He was arrested in Pitt County on Sept. 16 and charged with one count of embezzlement by an insurance agent.
Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that from Jan. 8-27, 2010, Bell, while working as an insurance agent for Monumental Insurance, failed to deposit $4,407.68 in insurance premiums he collected and kept the money for his personal use.
Bell was processed at the Pitt County Detention Center and released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. So far in 2010, these criminal investigators have seen more than 268 cases successfully closed with more than $18.5 million in restitution and recoveries, 54 criminal convictions and 89 arrests.
