North Carolina Fire Prevention Week Kicks Off In Cleveland County

Raleigh -- During Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 3-9, kids will learn how to "Be a Fire Buster" at a special exhibit at the Cleveland County Fair.

On Oct. 6, Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Wayne Goodwin will kick off Fire Prevention Week with Safe Kids North Carolina, Safe Kids Cleveland County and the Cleveland HealthCare Foundation at the "Be a Fire Buster" fire safety house at the fairgrounds in Shelby.

School groups visiting the fair will have the opportunity to go through the five rooms of the house to identify safety hazards, learn about home fire escape plans and practice crawling to safety.

"Kids often learn by doing. The "Be a Fire Buster" exhibit challenges kids to put real fire safety lessons to the test in a safe environment," said Commissioner Goodwin. "We hope these young people take what they learn home to share with their entire families."

Commissioner Goodwin has proclaimed Oct. 6 Family Fire Drill Day in North Carolina; he will urge all the students to go home, gather their family members and practice their own fire escape plan.
