Durham Sisters Arrested on Embezzlement Charges
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of a pair of sisters for alleged insurance fraud.
Evelyn Lee Navarro, 31, of 7205 Russell Road #D, Durham, is charged with one count of embezzlement by an insurance agent. Sophia Georgette Navarro, 25, of 511 Goodwin Road, Durham, is charged with one count of embezzlement.
Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that between July 17, 2008, and June 26, 2009, Evelyn Navarro, a licensed insurance agent, embezzled $10,274.27 while employed by Protective Agency, Inc.
Investigators claim her sister Sophia, who was also an employee at the agency, embezzled $8,603.90 between Oct. 17, 2008, and June 26, 2009.
Protective Agency made whole any customer policies that were affected.
Evelyn and Sophia Navarro were arrested on Oct. 14 and processed at the Durham County Detention Center. Each was placed under a $10,000 secured bond and scheduled to appear in Durham County District Court on Oct. 15.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. So far in 2010, these criminal investigators have seen more than 268 cases successfully closed with more than $18.5 million in restitution and recoveries, 54 criminal convictions and 89 arrests.
