Lumberton Bail Bondsman Arrested on Sex Charges

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Alexander Chavis, Jr., 38, of 57 Davita Drive, Lumberton; he is charged with two counts of sexual activity by a custodian.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that while working as a bondsman for Powell Bail Bonding of Castle Hayne, Chavis engaged in sexual activities with an individual that he bonded out of jail in August 2010.

Chavis surrendered to authorities at the Lumberton Police Department on Feb. 28. He was placed under a $500 unsecured bond and scheduled to appear in Robeson County District Court on March 2.

The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating claims of insurance fraud. In 2010, these criminal investigators saw more than 402 cases successfully closed with more than $21.1 million in restitution and recoveries, 88 criminal convictions and 126 arrests.
