Insurance Commissioner: Hurricane Victims Need More Time to File Flood Claims

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today sent a letter to Federal Emergency Management Agency officials urging them to extend the Hurricane Irene Proof of Loss deadline beyond the current deadline of Nov. 23.

Department of Insurance staff and I have met with many flood policyholders in areas affected by Hurricane Irene who received inadequate service from adjusters and were wholly unaware of FEMA’s deadline. I firmly believe that this deadline should be extended so that our residents have a fair chance to file flood insurance claims," Goodwin said.

Goodwin has requested that policyholders have at least two additional weeks to file Proof of Loss with the insurance company that issued them a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Standard Flood Insurance Policy.
