Nash County Woman Arrested After Allegedly Accepting Double Settlement Funds

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Mary Teresa Whitman Few, 43, of 3729 Cambridge Road, Durham; she is charged with one felony count each of insurance fraud, obtaining property by false pretense and attempting to obtain property by false pretense.

Few submitted an insurance claim to American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida for $3,950 worth of stolen property on Feb. 25 and submitted a police report to the company on March 21. After receiving the police report directly from the Durham Police Department, American Bankers representatives noticed differences in the two reports. American Banker representatives also discovered differences in the official police report and the report submitted with an April 2011 stolen property claim for which Few had been paid $9,371.36.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that Few altered documents to fraudulently obtain payments from the insurance company. With the assistance of the Durham City Police Warrant Squad, Few was arrested on Aug. 23, transported to the Durham County Magistrates Office and held in the Durham County Jail under a $10,000 secured bond.

The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud. Since Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin took office in 2009, criminal investigators have received more than 14,000 complaints, resulting in 602 arrests, 333 criminal convictions and more than 110 pending court cases. These efforts have delivered more than $48.5 million in restitution and recoveries for victims.

An estimated 10 cents of every dollar paid in premiums goes toward the payment of fraudulent claims. To report suspected fraud, contact the Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840. Callers may remain anonymous. Information is also available at
