NCDOI Offers Free Hurricane Preparedness Materials

New informational toolkits can help North Carolinians prepare for hurricanes and other disasters.

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin is pleased to announce that free informational toolkits are now available to help North Carolinians prepare for and recover from a hurricane or other disaster.

The NCHurriClaims toolkits are folders containing information about insurance coverages, tips for before and after a storm, instructions to create a home inventory and more. People are encouraged to keep copies of insurance policies and important contact information in the folders and store them in a safe place.

"There are simple things you should do before and after a hurricane to make the insurance claims process as smooth as possible," said Goodwin. "If you follow the instructions in this toolkit, you'll have tips, a home inventory, copies of your insurance policies and important contact information right at your fingertips if you need to file a claim."

Members of the public can pick up a free NCHurriClaims toolkit at one of more than 20 locations in eastern North Carolina. A list of locations can be found at

Goodwin also encourages everyone to prepare for hurricane season by visiting, the North Carolina Department of Insurance’s source of insurance-related information pertaining to hurricanes and other natural disasters.
