Wilson County Funeral Director Arrested for Alleged Forgery and Insurance Fraud

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Tyrone Powell Jones, 61, of 1312 Fikewood Street E., Wilson; he was charged with one felony count each of obtaining property by false pretense, insurance fraud, notary acknowledgement/verify administer oath/affidavit fraud, forgery and uttering a forged endorsement.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that on April 13, 2012, while acting as a funeral director, Jones forged a beneficiary’s name on a life insurance policy that entitled him to power of attorney and the proceeds of the policy. Investigators accuse Jones of then notarizing the fraudulent document and submitting it to Charlotte Mutual Insurance Company, which paid Jones approximately $798 for the claim.

Jones was arrested on Feb. 27 with the assistance of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office and placed under a $3,500 unsecured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Wilson County Court on March 1.
