Office Manager Accused of Embezzling Insurance Agency Funds
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Carlene Gifford Kefauver, 39, of 9405 Mill Grove Road, Indian Trail; she was charged with 33 counts of embezzlement by employee, five counts of forgery and five counts of uttering a forged instrument.
Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that between Nov. 30, 2011, and Aug. 21, 2012, while employed as an office manager with Queen City Insurance Agency, Kefauver wrote herself 33 unauthorized checks totaling $27,975.12 from the agency’s operating account.
Kefauver was arrested on March 12, processed at the Mecklenburg County Jail and placed under a $105,000 secured bond.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud. Since Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin took office in 2009, criminal investigators have received more than 16,800 complaints, resulting in 720 arrests and 380 criminal convictions. These efforts have delivered more than $50 million in restitution and recoveries for victims.
