Mecklenburg Man Arrested for Alleged Insurance Fraud
Department of Insurance seeks a second suspect in the case
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Calvin Brooks, 28, of 4626 Rock Stream Drive, Charlotte; he was charged with one count each of insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense.
The Department of Insurance requests assistance from the public in locating an additional suspect, Torran Phillips, 35, of 6527 W. Rockwell Blvd., Charlotte; he is wanted on one count each of insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense.
Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that Brooks and Phillips filed a fraudulent insurance claim with Hartford Insurance Company after a July 31, 2012, car accident in Charlotte. Investigators allege that Brooks and Phillips exaggerated the amount of damage to their vehicle and the extent of their medical injuries in an attempt to defraud the insurance company.
Brooks was arrested on March 13 in Mecklenburg County and held on $5,000 secured bond.
Criminal investigators are requesting the public’s assistance in locating Phillips. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to contact the North Carolina Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840.
