NCDOI Criminal Investigators Share Notes on Detecting Insurance Fraud

Teams with fire department to demonstrate car fire investigation techniques

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin is proud to announce the participation of the North Carolina Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at the recent International Association of Special Investigation Units' 29th Annual Seminar and Expo on Insurance Fraud.

More than 700 special investigative unit and law enforcement investigators from all over the world traveled to Greensboro to attend the seminar, which focused on the detection and investigation of insurance fraud. NCDOI criminal investigations partnered with the Wilmington Fire Department to deliver a presentation about vehicle fire investigations and how they relate to insurance fraud. The presentation - led by NCDOI Criminal Investigator and certified arson investigator Ian Tedder - included a lecture, hands-on training and live vehicle burn demonstrations.

The National Fire Incident Reporting System estimates a monetary loss of approximately $1.7 billion in motor vehicle fire claims annually in the United States.
