NCDOI Arrests High Point Woman for Alleged Forgery

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Deaven Lea Brooks, 36, of 112 Price St., Apartment C, High Point; she has been charged with one count each of insurance fraud and forgery.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that on June 20, 2014, Brooks forged the signature of a physician on a document required for a credit accident and health claim she submitted to Merit Life Insurance Company.

Brooks was arrested on Jan. 14, 2015, in Guilford County and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 17.

The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud. Since Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin took office in 2009, criminal investigators have made more than 1,000 arrests, resulting in more than 500 criminal convictions with more than 200 cases currently pending court. These efforts have delivered more than $61 million in restitution and recoveries for victims.
