Columbus County Woman Arrested for Car Insurance Fraud
RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Stephanie Davis, 40, of 5410 General Howe Highway, Riegelwood , Columbus County; she is charged with one count each of insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense.
Department of Insurance criminal investigators were contacted by representatives of Progressive Insurance about a claim Davis filed in November 2014. Davis claimed that her 2008 Mazda was damaged on private property in Riegelwood on Nov. 23 and that there was no prior damage on her vehicle. Investigators allege that Davis's car had actually been damaged in a car accident in Leland earlier in the month at a time when she did not have insurance coverage to repair the damage.
Davis was arrested on March 3 and placed under a $5,000 bond.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud.
