Durham Man Accused of Insurance Fraud

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of Michael Travis Lowe, 30, of 809 Drew St., Durham; he is charged with one count each of insurance fraud and filing a false report in Durham County.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege Lowe filed a fraudulent claim with Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and made a false police report on Jan. 31, 2015, claiming he was struck by a motor vehicle while crossing the street and suffered injuries.

Lowe was arrested on Oct. 6 while serving time at the Tabor Correctional Institution and placed under a $5,000 bond.

The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud. Since Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin took office in 2009, criminal investigators have made more than 1,500 arrests, resulting in more than 750 criminal convictions with more than 250 cases currently pending court.
