Columbus County Man Charged with Insurance Fraud over Stolen Boat Claim

RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin today announced the arrest of William Nathan Spaulding, 38, of 7985 Chauncey Town Road, Lake Waccamaw; he is charged with one count each of insurance fraud, obtaining property by false pretense and providing false statements on an application for insurance.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators accuse Spaulding of fraudulently obtaining $34,900 from Seaworthy Insurance in January 2015 by falsely claiming his boat, trailer and other fishing equipment had been stolen while returning from Lake Santee, S.C. Investigators allege Spaulding was not in Lake Santee and made fraudulent statements concerning his prior insurance claims history.

Spaulding was arrested on Nov. 29 and placed under a $2,500 bond.

If anyone bought any boating or fishing equipment from Spaulding, please contact the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840.

The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud.
