RALEIGH -- Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of William Earl Perkins, 62, of 1040 C St., Hassell; he is charged with one count each of insurance fraud, attempting to obtain property by false pretense and filing a false report of motor vehicle theft.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators accuse Perkins of fraudulently reporting his vehicle was stolen with National General Insurance Company in an attempt to receive insurance payment. Investigators allege Perkins wrecked the vehicle then left the scene.

Perkins was arrested on March 31 in Martin County and placed under a $1,000 bond.

According to the FBI, insurance fraud costs the average family between $400 and $700 per year in the form of increased premiums," said Commissioner Causey. "Consumer protection is my number one priority and I will continue to fight insurance fraud with your help."
