2-day On-Campus Program at the National Fire Academy (State Weekend)

November 21 - 23, 2014

The 2-Day on-Campus Program (formerly State Weekend Program) is targeted for fire service personnel with a minimum of 3 year’s experience. Most 2-day courses are designed for mid-level officers rather than chief officers or firefighters.

Students: Read and following instructions prior to registering.

To apply for a course you need a FEMA Student Identification Number (SID). This number will be used in place of a Social Security Number on General Admissions Application forms. This includes applications for the 2-day on-campus program (formerly the State Weekend Program). Applications received with a Social Security Number instead of the required Student Identification Number will be returned to the applicant. Please click on the link below to obtain your SID. The process takes about 10 minutes.

Eligibility to receive a certificate of completion requires class attendance both Saturday and Sunday. Failure to do so,will result in your entire department being banned from State Weekend programs for a period of 3 years. If you have an emergency, and must leave the campus, please contact Student Services in Building “C” and ask them to inform Wayne Bailey or Mike Edwards.

Registration: $80.00 -- covers meals in the Campus Cafeteria - Friday dinner through Sunday lunch (at the campus cafeteria), a recreation pass, socials and favors. Lodging and course costs are absorbed by the Academy. Transportation expenses and meals en route and return are the responsibility of the student.

Application Deadline: Online Registration is available. However, a hard copy of Form 119-25-2 and payment, (check or money order) must be mailed to the address below, postmarked no later than August 31st, 2014.

Each application will be reviewed to determine participation eligibility. Applications received by our office, without a Student Identification Number (SID), and payment, as indicated above, will not be processed.

We will be accepting Credit and Debit Card payments this year. This method of payment is preferred. If you still wish to send a check that is also acceptable. Make the check payable to the NFA Weekend and mail to:

You will be asked for 1st, 2nd and 3rd class choices as it is not always possible to assign everyone to their 1st class choice.

  • W0523 - Executive Skill Series: Exercising Leadership Ethically (Course available only during NFA Sponsored State Weekends) -- This new 2-day course provides students with the ability to recognize ethical dilemmas in the context of their environments, apply a decision model to resolve these dilemmas, render ethical decisions, and defend under scrutiny the resulting decisions that were made in an effort to resolve these dilemmas. The ESS: ELE course will become the fourth offering within the Executive Skill Series.
  • W0520 - Executive Skills Series: Exercising Leadership within Communities (Course available only during NFA Sponsored State Weekends) -- The purpose of this course is to provide Fire Service authority figures with knowledge and skills, enabling them to exercise leadership when confronting adaptive challenges presented by increasingly diverse internal and external communities. The goal of the course is for participants to utilize the diversity of ideas, peoples and cultures as resources in exercising leadership to address adaptive challenges in their communities.
  • W0497 - National Fire Incident Reporting System: Introduction to NFIRS 5.0 (Course available only during NFA Sponsored State Weekends) -- This 2-day course teaches students how to use standardized forms to achieve uniformity in their incident and activity reporting. This training program is designed specifically to support local fire service organizations, and will assist them in providing data to their management and to decision makers, as well as to their State uniform fire reporting system. At a local level, the NFIRS data can be used to: describe a community's fire problem; support budget requests; improve decision making for allocation of resources; assist in planning for future fire protection; help identify opportunities for scheduling nonemergency activities; evaluate code enforcement programs; and identify target audiences for public fire education programs.
  • W0290 - Training Operations in Small Departments (Course available only during NFA Sponsored State Weekends) -- This 2-day course is designed to provide students with some basic tools and skills to coordinate training in a small fire/EMS organization. A training function in a smaller department typically may include conducting training drills and coordinating training with a nearby larger city or State training function. Course content includes Leadership issues in fire service training, such as why and how the local training officer must be a catalyst for change, and personal motivators within the department. Identifying the legal issues affecting the training function, including an understanding of a standard of care, and the impact of OSHA and NFPA standards. Safety considerations in training. Marketing training internally. Identifying ways to justify training needs. Resolving training conflicts using appropriate conflict resolution techniques. Selecting and evaluating training curriculum and materials from outside sources. Effective delivery and evaluation of training
  • W0522 - Executive Skills Series: Exercising Leadership through Difficult Conversations (Course available only during NFA Sponsored State Weekends) -- The purpose of this course is to provide knowledge and skills for having difficult conversations to exercise leadership in addressing adaptive challenges. The goal of this course is for the participant to identify and apply skills for having difficult conversations as they relate to exercising leadership when addressing adaptive challenges.
  • W0730 - Health and Safety Officer (Revised) (Course available only during NFA Sponsored State Weekends) -- This 2-day course examines the Health and Safety Officer's role in identifying, evaluating, and implementing policy and procedures that affect health and safety aspects for emergency responders. Risk analysis, wellness and other occupational safety issues will be the main emphasis of this course.
  • W0729 - Incident Safety Officer (Revised) (Course available only during NFA Sponsored State Weekends) -- This 2-day course examines the Safety Officer's role at emergency responses. A specific focus on operations within an Incident Command System (ICS) as a Safety Officer is a main theme. Response to all-hazards types of situations will be emphasized.
  • W0121 - Politics and the White Helmet (Course available only during NFA Sponsored State Weekends) -- This 2-day course is aimed at providing the chief officers in both fire service and EMS agencies with a overview of the ways to succeed and work within the local, county and state level political system to achieve positive results for their department. It will give the officer an improved insight into better ways to relate and speak to citizens and others to gain support and understanding of their needs for bond issues, tax votes, and general elections. Participants learn about successful approaches appropriate for government employees and volunteers. The course identifies successful tools needed to address the challenge necessary to bring about change, and how a department's culture of power, influence, negotiation, and coalition building is important to success.
