Welcome to the new Pyrotechnic Event Employee Web Page. As part of the new changes to the pyrotechnic laws, Event Employees are now allowed to handle pyrotechnics as long as they are under the direct supervision of the licensed operator in charge of the site, and they hold the proper ATF clearance.
To assist the code officials of each jurisdiction throughout North Carolina, OSFM has developed an on-line certification process for event employees. Prior to beginning this process, verify that the Authority Having Jurisdiction(AHJ) where your event is to be held is participating in the OSFM on-line process. All local requirements supersede the on-line process offered by OSFM, therefore the local authority Having Jurisdiction may elect to participate or not participate in the OSFM on-line process.
THE AHJ MUST BE NOTIFIED THAT THE PYROTECHNIC OPERATOR INTENDS TO USE EVENT EMPLOYEES AS ASSITANTS AT THEIR EVENT SITE. THE EVENT EMPLOYEE CANDIDATE MAY BE DENIED ACCESS TO THE SITE IF THE PYORTECHNIC OPERATOR FAILS TO NOTIFY THE AHJ PRIOR TO THE EVENT.
If the AHJ accepts the use of the OSFM online Certification, the event employee candidate should participate in a safety orientation with the pyrotechnic operator prior to participating in the certification exam. The questions contained on this site should be used as a guide for this orientation. The event employee candidate should be able to answer each of these questions prior to beginning the certification exam.
Upon successful completion of the exam the event employee candidate will be issued a date stamped certificate indicating that they have passed the on-line examination for event employees. The candidate should fill out the Event Employee Certification Application and bring it, the certificate, and verification of identification with them to the pyrotechnic event site. The certification must be obtained no more than three days prior to the event that the candidate is seeking access to. The certificate is void if the event is further than three days from the date of certification, or the event is not the event specified by the certificate. Certificates are not transferrable from one candidate to another and can only be used for one event. Multiple events, regardless of location, content, or performance dates, require multiple event employee certificates. This program requires one certificate per event employee per event.
