During the 2009 legislative session, the North Carolina General Assembly passed Senate Bill 563 and created N.C. General Statute 58-82A-1 aimed at preventing pyrotechnic disasters and/or tragedies from occurring in North Carolina. The new law requires anyone discharging/operating pyrotechnics or proximate explosives to attend a training course and earn a pyrotechnics operator permit before conducting a pyrotechnics display in North Carolina, effective February 1, 2010.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • TEMPORARY PYROTECHNIC OPERATORS LICENSE APPROVED
    The North Carolina Legislature has approved the issuance of Temporary Licenses for Operators with documented relevant experience on a minimum of 6 previous pyrotechnic events. Individuals that obtain a temporary license have not passed the pyrotechnics exam at the time of issuance. The temporary license will only be valid for 30 days after the date of issuance, and can only be issued until July 31, 2010. The process will involve an application and supporting documentation for experience. Experience can be documented through the provision of six permits issued in the applicant name in the past 10 years, or the provision of an experience letter signed by the ATF license holder under which the applicant is to operate.   • NC Operator’s Assistant Permit without examination
    All valid out of state Pyrotechnic and/or Proximate license holders will automatically qualify for a North Carolina Operator’s Assistant Permit without examination. An Assistant’s application and all of the supporting documentation, as well as a $20 application fee will be required prior to the issuance of an Assistant’s Permit.
